Whalen attended the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. where he received a Masters Degree in National Security Affairs. His joint tour was at the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he served as Intelligence Watch Team Commander and Chief of the Watch.
Selected for squadron command, Whalen reported to the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 34 Blue Blasters at NAS Oceana, Va. He made two deployments aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) participating in Operations Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch. Selected for Major Command, Whalen reported to Charleston, S.C., for Nuclear Power Training with prototype training in Ballston Spa, N.Y. He was Executive Officer of USS George Washington (CVN 73) for 23 months in Norfolk.
Captain Whalen was the Commanding Officer of USS Juneau (LPD 10) and USS Denver (LPD 9) homeported in Sasebo, Japan. Whalen last served on the staff of the Commander, Naval Air Forces, San Diego, Calif., as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Force Readiness. In December of 2010 he was awarded a Masters degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. Captain Whalen became Commanding Officer of USS Carl Vinson in December 2011.
He has accumulated over 3,500 flight hours and 775 arrested landings. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
In September 1992, Captain Slaughter reported to the "Shamrocks" of VS-41 for initial training in the S-3B Viking and upon completion of training joined the “Red Griffins” of VS-38. From December 1993 until August 1997, he completed two deployments aboard USS Constellation (CV 64). In September 1997, Captain Slaughter returned to VS-41 as an Instructor Pilot and Landing Signals Officer (LSO).
Captain Slaughter returned to the fleet in May 1999 as Carrier Air Wing Nine LSO. Cross-training in the F-14A Tomcat, he deployed with USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), flying combat missions in support of Operation Southern Watch and was selected for transition to the Tomcat community.
In November 2000, Captain Slaughter reported to the “Fighting Checkmates” of VF-211. Serving as the Assistant Maintenance Officer, he deployed again with John C. Stennis to the North Arabian Sea flying combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After transition to the F-14D, Captain Slaughter reported to the “Fighting Blacklions” of VF-213 in May 2003. Serving as the Quality Assurance Officer and Operations Officer, he deployed with USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), flying combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In November of 2005, Captain Slaughter reported to the United States Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA. Within the Joint Center for Operational Analysis, he served as an Operations Analyst and as the Executive Assistant to the Director.
Selected for Strike Fighter command, Captain Slaughter completed F/A-18F Super Hornet training at VFA-106 and in May 2008 reported to VFA-213 as Executive Officer. Following an extended combat deployment with USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he assumed Command of the Blacklions in August 2009.
In January 2011, Captain Slaughter reported to OPNAV N88 as the Special Programs requirements officer. Selected for the Aviation Nuclear Power Program, Captain Slaughter began the nuclear power training track in January 2012 and reported as Prospective Executive Officer, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), in August 2013.
Captain Slaughter has over 4,700 flight hours and 1,155 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal (four Strike Flight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and numerous unit, campaign, and service awards.

Captain Kent “Torch” Whalen is a native of Michigan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science. His first fleet tour was in the A-7E Corsair with the Bulls of VA-37 flying from the deck of the USS Forrestal (CV 59). Whalen went ashore to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 to transition to the FA-18C and remained as an FRS Instructor Pilot. He then served as the Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va. He returned to sea as a Department Head with the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 86 Sidewinders, flying from USS America (CV 66). This tour included flights in support of Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia.

In October 1991, Captain Slaughter received his commission and was designated a Naval Aviator at NAS Meridian, MS. His first assignment was as an Instructor Pilot in the “Attack Frogs” of VT-19, flying the T-2C Buckeye.
In September 1992, Captain Slaughter reported to the "Shamrocks" of VS-41 for initial training in the S-3B Viking and upon completion of training joined the “Red Griffins” of VS-38.
